This morning I share a writing by Steve Charleston from his book, “Hope as Old as Fire”.
“The Christmas manger, the sentimental scene, the familiar cast of characters, on table tops and front lawns, all across America. This familiar image is a metaphor for my spiritual life. Sometimes I have been a shepherd, feeling called but not knowing why. Sometimes a wise man, surprised by my own intellect. Sometimes Joseph, silent but steady. Sometimes Mary, wanting to mother the world with unconditional love. Sometimes the camel, irascible in my convictions. Sometimes the donkey, willing to carry the load. And once in a great while, I am the infant, that holy hope, packed in straw, delivered by God, to a long waiting world.”
Too many people think Christmas is an old, old story we remember on Christmas Eve. But, I believe Christmas happens when begin to find ourselves in this story.
No matter who you are today, or tomorrow, know this: that you are an intricate part of God’s story!
Merry Christmas
Pastor Brook, feeling a bit like that irascible camel today, Brook
