Why I Love my Local Church Part 2: Be Nimble!

One of the nursery rhymes that still sticks in my mind is this one:

“Jack be nimble, jack be quick. Jack jump over the candlestick!”

I remember trying it once, when my mom and dad were gone...and I have to say...I wasn’t too nimble nor too quick, because as I tried to jump over the candlestick, the cuff of my jeans started on fire!  Luckily, I knew the drop and roll method of putting out fires!

It pays to be nimble in this ever-changing world, doesn’t it? And, although it doesn’t always happen in the church, there are times when I just love Bear Creek United Methodist Church because it is exactly that...nimble!

Joshua Evans, and leading business consultant, says this about the importance of being nimble:

In a fast-changing business environment, the ability to adapt quickly is key. Having a nimble company culture is essential to staying ahead of the competition and overcoming unexpected challenges. Nimble organizations are agile, flexible, and responsive. They are quick to act on opportunities or threats and have the capability to pivot quickly if needed. This allows them to stay competitive, remain innovative, and keep up with the changing needs of their customers.

This goes for churches too! This week, for instance. One of our members, Debby Heimfeld, who has an amazing "on the ground" connection with many helping organizations in our area, found out that some of the asylees (asylum seeking families) who have been staying at Riverton Park are now being placed in permanent dwellings. How wonderful! In talking to Riverton Park UMC, Debby Heimfeld found out that they have absolutely no kitchen supplies for their new homes. Debby’s heart grew even bigger than it already is and wondered if Bear Creek UMC could help. The problem is that they are moving in this coming week! Could we move fast enough to make this happen?

Well, I think the answer is a resounding yes!  This morning, Karen Smith, our God’s Hands chair, purchased and delivered all the kitchen goods needed for 4 families!  Our plan is to assemble them on Sunday morning during our Kick-off Celebration meal! What a wonderful way to celebrate who we are at Bear Creek:  A thriving, inviting, inclusive community reaching out to the world with the compassion and unconditional love of Jesus!

Part of the reason we can be so nimble is because of our generous givers! We just know that if we have a need out in the world that fits who we are, our church members will respond with warm and generous hearts!

That’s what I call nimble and quick!

Way to go, Bear Creek UMC!

And thank you to Debby Heimfeld, Karen Smith, the God’s Hands team, and everyone else at Bear Creek UMC for "Putting Love First"!

Your friend and pastor, happy to be a part of you, Brook
